Footsteps of St Augustine

Milan, San Gimignano, Cascia, Ostia Antica

St Augustine was the Bishop of Hippo (now Annaba, Algeria) and was extremely influential in history, known as a doctor of the Church. He was a renowned theologian and prolific writer as well as a skilled preacher and rhetorician.  Starting in Milan where St Augustine studied, we will take you from the Milan Duomo to Pavia where his relics are buried. We will continue through the Tuscan countryside to San Gimignano, a picturesque town with a skyline of medieval towers, where we will visit the Augustine Convent, Siena, Florence and Augustinian nuns in a hermitage in Lecceto.

  • Duomo di Milano

    Milan is an important place in the life of St Augustine as it was here in the Cathedral that he was baptised by St Ambrose. 

  • Da Vinci's Last Supper

    One of the most recognisable paintings in the world, Leonardo Da Vinci's mural of the Last Supper hangs in the dining hall of the Dominican Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie

  • Basilica of Sant Ambrogio

    The Cathedral of St Ambrose is one of the most ancient churches in Milan and built on the site of many martyrs of the Roman persecution.

  • San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro, Pavia

    The remains of St Augustine are kept in a marble reliquary on the upper floor of the church. The reliquary is richly decorated with stories of the saints life on all four sides. 

  • San Gimignano

    A small walled medieval town in the province of Siena in Tuscany. It is famous for its medieval architecture and tower houses 

  • Bennozo Gozzoli Frescoes

    See some of the beauitful frescoes by Italian Renaissance painter Bennozo Gozzoli in Tuscany and Umbria

  • St Clare of Montefalco

    St Clare of Montefalco, also known as St Clare of the Cross, was born and died in Montefalco. She was an Augustinian nun and abbess who had a vision of Jesus giving her his cross to carry in her heart 

  • Cascia, St Rita & Stations of the Cross

  • Ancient port of Ostia

    St Monica, St Augustine's mother,  is buried here under the Cathedral Santa Aurea
